About the Emergency Medicine Center Schneider -
The story of a unique department

Department symbol.jpg

The story of the MALRAD (emergency medicine department) of the Schneider Children's Medical Center is unique because it is a department that serves as much more than an emergency room in a children's hospital, an independent hospital that is the only one in our region dedicated to the treatment and hospitalization of children and youth from the age of 0-18 in the department, which is actually the first reception place of the Schneider Medical Center Children in Israel.

The MALRAD team consists of about one hundred professionals who receive the children and their companions and provide them with full medical service and treatment on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week and throughout the year without a break.

The main goal of the medical center is to provide the best medical care, with the aim of not hospitalizing the children unnecessarily or transferring them to other departments of the hospital for additional tests.

The impressive result of this approach speaks for itself - out of about 58,000 children who come to the Medical Center every year, about 50,000 of them are discharged home and only about 8,000 children continue to be hospitalized or continue treatment in the ward.

 - A unique treatment approach
All tests and treatments in one department, as much as possible

The MALRAD works in the spirit of the approach that a comprehensive medical response must be given already at the first visit, in order to reduce as much as possible the need for hospitalization or further inquiries in additional departments or clinics unnecessarily.

Accordingly, the medical center is prepared and fully equipped to perform various tests and many treatments, from blood tests to ultrasound scans and up to the most innovative equipment.

This equipment is unique because some of it was put into use at the MALRAD for the first time in Israel, in order to shorten processes and conduct most of the medical procedures at the MALRAD, some of it was bought after ERAD volunteers who have been accompanying the MALRAD for more than twenty years located its unique needs while consulting with a manager of the department and the head nurse.

Some of the innovative medical equipment is there as a result of the understanding that the more the medical center can immediately get maximum answers on the spot, the better off the patient will be, the stay in the medical center will be shortened and the medical staff will be able to make quick and good decisions and the children will be able to go home with recommendations for further treatment and follow-up.

Indeed, the MALRAD is proud of the fact that only about one out of six children admitted to the MALRAD is hospitalized during the visit for continuation of treatment, which greatly streamlines the work and makes it possible to provide service to more and more children and their companions.

The emergency medicine department that has reached excellence

About 58,000 children and teenagers pass through the Schneider Medical Center throughout the year and most of them are released after receiving treatment during their visit to the Medical Center, with recommendations for further treatment and/or referrals accordingly.

As a results of comprehensive tests that are conducted on the patients with the innovative equipment of the MALRAD, without exposing them to the hassle of being hospitalized,  parents and patients save unnecessary time.

For this purpose, the staff of doctors and nurses at the MALRAD are aided not only by the advanced equipment, but also by the knowledge acquired in various and comprehensive trainings and professional conferences to which they are sometimes sent with the funding and/or participation of the ERAD association.
Advanced equipment of the type that has greatly advanced the level of service and treatment provided at the Medical Center is, for example, the portable ultrasound device that arrives at the patient's bed and allows the exact condition of the child to be diagnosed, providing a quick response in the event of head injuries, abdominal injuries, bleeding, organ enlargement or any other life-saving procedure.

Another piece of equipment is a device for testing blood gases, the results of which are so important during the resuscitation stages, a test that is done on the spot and instead of wasting valuable time and manpower on sending the blood to the laboratory and waiting for the answers.

The MALRAD - for the children and also for the families

The MALRAD team includes not only doctors and nurses but also secretaries who welcome the family, a social worker, service coordinators and cleaning workers.

Everyone surrounds the child who comes for treatment and also his family.

The great amount of thought that goes into caring for a child is based on the understanding that it is caring not only for him but also for the entire family, because it is often the one that needs the calming and proper attention.

The successful and fruitful cooperation of the professional and empathetic staff succeeds in instilling a more pleasant atmosphere that facilitates the clarification of the situation and the treatment of the child and mainly contributes to the stabilization of the emotional state of the child's relatives, no less than the emotional state of the treated child.

The importance of the activity of ERAD
in the Malrad

One hundred people who work together all year round are the ones who made the MALRAD what it is - an emergency room that is also a place where the staff learns on the field what the right priorities and needs are, both in terms of training and additional professional knowledge in emergency pediatrics and in terms of the medical equipment required to reach the excellence that currently characterizes Schneider.

All of this was also made possible thanks to the close and daily cooperation of the faculty with the ERAD personnel who are attentive to every need and requirement, and who also initiate some of the activities that seem beneficial and promote the department, such as complementary medicine trainings that optimize the methods of treating the child and his family on several levels.
